Goals back to back
Set two goals back to back and run the drill with players attacking and defending on both sides simultaneously. The ball is moved quickly between reps, forcing defenders and goalies to reset, communicate, and adjust their positioning as play flips from one cage to the other. Emphasize awareness, quick transitions, and staying organized while tired.
Partner Passing on the Run
Split into pairs. Players will partner pass to the cone and then back. Focusing on passing and catching while moving.
Full Field Fast Breaks
Set up two lines of players at opposite ends of the field, with a goalie in each net, three attackmen, and three defenders at each end setup for a fast break (Attack in L shape, Defense in triangle). The drill begins when the goalies at both ends throw an outlet pass on the run to the line on their right (change to left as you see fit). The midfielder gets the outlet and pushes the 4v3 fast break, while the other line sends a chaser to the ball carrier. The drill continues until the fast break results in a shot or defensive stop.
Scrappin'
Scrappin is a high-energy starter drill that builds toughness, stick skills, and communication in tight spaces. Three offensive players face two defenders inside a cone box (~15 yards from goal). Coach rolls out three balls per rep. Players battle for ground balls, then offense looks to space out in a triangle and move the ball quickly for a finish. Defense works 2v3 with sticks in lanes, disrupting passes, and clearing outside the cones. Points: offense scores on goals, defense scores on clear
Hungry Hippo Relay
Relay race format with 8 kids per line. Coach rolls ground ball, youth player scoops and sprints to dunk ball in bucket, returns to line and sits. Team that finishes first wins. Run best-of-three format. Emphasizes ground ball technique while maintaining fun competitive element. Simple setup: lines, buckets, multiple balls. Keeps practice engaging and fun through relay race excitement and friendly competition.
4 Corner Motion Drill
- Set up lines in each corner of the 8-meter. Start with the ball in a top corner. - The top player dodges tries to dodge, then passes to the low girl on her side. - The low girl catches with her outside hand and quickly passes across to the opposite low girl. - That player hits the same side high girl cutting to cage for a shot. - Emphasize quick ball movement, accurate passing, and timing the cut so the pass meets the cutter in stride. Rotate after each rep so everyone gets reps at each spot.
Youth Defensive Shuffle Drill
Set up a 5-yard side-to-side area using cones. Players start in a low defensive stance, feet shoulder-width, knees bent, hands/stick in front. Shuffle laterally across the zone, keeping stick up when changing direction. Focus on quick, controlled footwork and proper stick positioning. Progress by adding a ball carrier to reinforce stick placement and reaction while maintaining defensive stance.
3v2 Drill
Set three offensive players (Player 1–3) against two defenders (Player 4–5) in the attack zone. Coach starts with a ground ball or pass to offense. Offense works quick passes, sharp cuts, and stick skills to create high-percentage shots. Defenders communicate, slide, and maintain positioning. Play continues until a goal, save, clear, or whistle. Rotate roles to keep all players active.
Scrimmage
Set 10 offensive players (Player 1–10) vs. 10 defenders (Player 11–20) on a full field with nets at each end. Coach starts play with a ground ball, faceoff, or pass. Play continues until a goal, save, clear, or whistle. Encourage players to communicate, apply game-level intensity, and practice transitions, stickwork, and defensive positioning.
Waterfall
4 lines, 2 on each side of the field (full field drill), at the 20's and 40's, passing across the field all the way down. Start with a clear and end with a shot. Can progress to place defense along field in the middle.
Diamond 1v1s
Set up cones in a diamond around half the field. Set up 1 cone and another cone 5-7 yards inside. Offensive and defensive players line up at each cone with balls. The defensive player starts on the outside, offensive player on the outside. On the whistle, players exchange, coach throws a ball to offensive player and offensive player dodges to the goal against defensive player. Focus on good approaches for defense and hard dodges & separation for offense.
Swarm Drill
Set up 6 offensive players outside the crease moving clockwise and 6 defenders inside moving counterclockwise. Coach rolls or passes the ball to a random offensive player. Two defenders immediately converge to create a 2v1 on the ball. Offense must secure the ground ball, find outlets, and quickly move the ball. Defenders rotate to cover adjacent threats, emphasizing communication, quick reactions, and aggressive doubling.
