3 Second Drill
Set two lines of players on opposite wings with a feeder at the middle. 3 Players start on the crease and break when ball is rolled. A ball is rolled to the first player, who scoops it, quickly surveys the field, and either catches and shoots or attacks the backside. After the first attempt, they rotate to the end of a line while the next player begins, keeping continuous flow. Emphasize three-second decision-making to simulate fast, offensive transitions.
Crease breakout
Coach rolls Goalie the ball at crease, goalie scoops up and outlets to runner. As soon as pass is made, player comes from “bench” position and receives pass, goes in for a shot. Set players up above house. When player runs past goalie, coach rolls to goalie for scoop and outlet pass. -Coach needed at each net and near rag lines to pass L1/R1 ball if they miss or goalie flubs pass.
W Clearing Warm up
Working on clears, defense getting stopped, then moving back through the goalie to reverse the field. Setup: two lines of defenders behind goal, two defenders are in at a time. \ \ When goalie yells clear, both defenders cut up and out asking for the pass. \ Goalie passes to either side, that player runs up to the cones and has to turn back as if that were an attacker on the ride. At this point, goalie has walked up past the 8m and now is there to help reverse the field and receive the pass to then send to the other player on the other side. That player then runs through their cones. Coaching Points: Turn before the "attack" reaches you. (can add two dummy attackers for effect). Reminder, if we see two attackers closing in, we reverse the field. Make sure we are protecting our sticks as we turn to reverse the field. \ \ Adjustments: Have dummy attackers follow at 70-80% after hitting the cone.
DU Shuttle Line
Three lines, basic triangle. Cone 1 starts with the ball, they pass to cone 2, then cone 2 passes to 3. Player at cone 3 then has to dodge around set dodging poles/dummies/cones to make a pass to cone 1. Have players pick dodges themselves or set specific dodges for them. Focus on quick movement, change of speed and outside hand catches. Depending level, change of stickwork by adding in BTBs, around the worlds, twizzlers.
Quick Hands
Develop goalie hand-eye coordination without a stick. Goalie in ready position, no stick. Coach stands 4-5 feet away and tosses balls at the cage. Goalie makes saves mimicking stick movements but catches with the top hand. Work all shot positions. Variation: Bounce the ball and have the goalie save it using only the chest protector.
3 Man Relays
Stop-and-go sprint conditioning that mimics game situations. 2 cones 10 yards apart. One player at each cone, one in the middle. On the whistle, the middle player sprints to a cone and taps hands — that player sprints to the opposite cone and releases the next player. Continue for 2 minutes, then rest 1 minute. Repeat for your target duration. Variation: Add a ground ball or a specific dodge to each sprint.
Dodging Shuttle
Can be done anywhere or to goal
Riding Drill 2-1-3 V with Dead ball off Sideline
Improve riding after a dead ball on the sideline. Lock your players onto the clearing team's attack and midfield. Play a 3-man zone with your attack, splitting the goalie and defensemen. Overload the ball side and force long passes or throws into traffic. Variation: Strengthen the clear to practice forcing turnovers in live situations.
