Pinch and Pop to a Fast Break

Practice the pinch-and-pop faceoff move transitioning into a fast break. Set up at the midfield X. Faceoff player goes against a coach or soft defender who will lose the draw. 3 attack players set up in the zone for a fast break. On the whistle, win the pinch-and-pop, gain the ground ball, and push the fast break. Variation: Use different faceoff moves. Add trailing players to develop into a slow break or 6v6.

Fast Break Drill from Face-Off

Combine faceoff work with fast-break offense. Two middies come to the faceoff X, each with a ball. One ball is used for the faceoff, the other placed to the side. Winner attacks with the first ball; loser grabs the second and attacks the opposite end. Both push 4v3 fast breaks. Next pair steps in and repeats. Variation: Add a defender at the box area who runs in after the faceoff to create a 4v4 if the break doesn't convert. Add wing players for full faceoff reps.

West Genny

Set three offensive players (Player 1–3) vs. two defenders (Player 4–5) on a short field with a net at each end (sideline-to-sideline OR box-to-box OR similar distance). Play 3v2 until a goal or turnover. The last offensive player to touch the ball rotates out; remaining offense switches to defense and runs back into the hole to defend their net. The goalie clears a new ball to 3 new offensive players pushing down in a 3v2. End practice on a high note and keep score for fun!

3 Second Drill

Set two lines of players on opposite wings with a feeder at the middle. 3 Players start on the crease and break when ball is rolled. A ball is rolled to the first player, who scoops it, quickly surveys the field, and either catches and shoots or attacks the backside. After the first attempt, they rotate to the end of a line while the next player begins, keeping continuous flow. Emphasize three-second decision-making to simulate fast, offensive transitions.

Crease breakout

Coach rolls Goalie the ball at crease, goalie scoops up and outlets to runner. As soon as pass is made, player comes from “bench” position and receives pass, goes in for a shot. Set players up above house. When player runs past goalie, coach rolls to goalie for scoop and outlet pass. -Coach needed at each net and near rag lines to pass L1/R1 ball if they miss or goalie flubs pass.

Rebound Wall

This drill sharpens goalie reactions, tracking, and positioning when shots come from unpredictable angles. Set the goal 3–5 yards off a solid wall so that shots bounce back toward the net. The coach stands behind the goal and fires balls at the wall, creating unpredictable rebounds. The goalie must track the ball off the wall, step properly, and make the save. Focus on maintaining consistent positioning, staying low and balanced, and reacting quickly with proper hand-eye coordination. To challenge the goalie further, vary shot speed, angles, and timing so rebounds aren’t predictable. The drill builds reflexes and improves confidence handling shots from unexpected locations.

- A line of attack/defense at the 30 - Start with a 4v4 ground ball from the GLE - If attack gets it, they clear to the 30 and one attacker adds to the drill from the attacking line creating at 5v4. - If defense gets it, they clear to the 30 and drop the ball, then one attack and one defense adds to drill creating a 5v5

Up and Over Shooting

Develop ball movement and positioning — move the ball from a low wing, up and across for a dodge and shot. 3 lines with cones: one 3 yards behind GLE, one at the top of the box, one at the opposite top. Balls start low. Bottom player dodges inside, bounces back, and feeds the top line. Top catches and moves it across to the third line, who dodges off the cone and shoots. Rotate clockwise. Variation: Switch sides. Designate the final shooter. Add defense. Put goalies in for live shots.

Goals back to back

Set two goals back to back and run the drill with players attacking and defending on both sides simultaneously. The ball is moved quickly between reps, forcing defenders and goalies to reset, communicate, and adjust their positioning as play flips from one cage to the other. Emphasize awareness, quick transitions, and staying organized while tired.
