Run the Arc
Practice defensive positioning and holds at GLE when playing a ball carrier from behind. Defenders and dummy attackmen line up on the end line behind the goal. On the whistle, the attacker drives right. The defender beats him to GLE, wheels his hips, and turns him back using a cross forearm or top-hand hold. The attacker rolls through X and drives left — defender repeats. Continue until the defender has turned his man back twice on each side, then rotate. Variation: Challenge defenders to do it without sticks or with short sticks.

Diamond 1v1s
Set up cones in a diamond around half the field. Set up 1 cone and another cone 5-7 yards inside. Offensive and defensive players line up at each cone with balls. The defensive player starts on the outside, offensive player on the outside. On the whistle, players exchange, coach throws a ball to offensive player and offensive player dodges to the goal against defensive player. Focus on good approaches for defense and hard dodges & separation for offense.
1 v 1 in Box
Create a 10 x 10 box. One player with the ball in on offense, and tries to get past the other player to the other side of the box. This can be done with the defender with a stick or without.
Knock Down Drill
Two players or coaches are passing back and forth. The defensive line cuts through the pass at a 90 degree angle. They sprint to the cone and come back to the middle/crease leading with their stick to knock down the next pass.
Feed the Crease
Practice defending crease players against picks, cuts, and feeds. 2 offensive players on the crease vs 2 defenders. Perimeter players move the ball around looking to feed the crease. Defenders constantly adjust, staying between their man and the ball to deny feeds. Communication is key to covering picks and rolls. Variation: Have offense work pick/re-pick, high-low cuts, and pick-and-roll on the crease.
Meat Loaf Drill GB and Passes
Improve passing and catching on the run using both hands, with an emphasis on over-the-shoulder catching and quick hand switches. Similar to the Star Drill. Use 2-3 balls with advanced players. Run in both directions to work both hands. Focus on cross-handed catching (over the shoulder), quick hand switches, and fast passes. Start with ground balls, then progress to passes. Variation: Add more balls for constant involvement. Adjust the distance between lines to change pass length and drill speed.
Muddle Drill
Drill Description This is a competitive 5v5 drill focused on winning ground balls inside the 8 meter and transitioning quickly to offense or defense. Five attackers and five defenders start inside the 8 meter. The coach moves around the outside of the 12 meter and behind the goal with a ball, and players may not look at the coach. The coach rolls a ground ball into the 8 meter to start play. If the offense gains possession, they immediately attack the cage and try to score. If the defense gains possession, they must clear the ball with control to the 50 yard line. Scoring: -Attack scores a goal = 1 point -Attack forces a turnover on the ride = 2 points -Defense clears successfully to the 50 = 1 point -Defense completes two passes during the clear = 2 points
Post Up 1v1
Work on attacking with your back to the cage in a 1v1 setup. Start with the ball entering the 8-meter; the player posts up using elbows, body, and footwork to shield the defender and create space. Incorporate jab steps, body fakes, and shoulder fakes to initiate contact and open shot opportunities. As skills progress, add the four perimeter players for full 5v5 simulation, emphasizing vision, timing, and decision-making under a shot clock.
