Rides/Clears

7v7 (or 4v4 for numbers with 2 defenders, 2 attackers and 2 middies on each team) - One team starts by passing the ball around - On the whistle, they pass to the goalie, replicating a shot on cage - The goalie is now clearing to the team that was just on defense - The team that was on offense is riding the defense - Once the ball is at the other end of the field, settle it, and do it again going the other way (both teams ride and clear)

Full Field Fast Breaks

Set up two lines of players at opposite ends of the field, with a goalie in each net, three attackmen, and three defenders at each end setup for a fast break (Attack in L shape, Defense in triangle). The drill begins when the goalies at both ends throw an outlet pass on the run to the line on their right (change to left as you see fit). The midfielder gets the outlet and pushes the 4v3 fast break, while the other line sends a chaser to the ball carrier. The drill continues until the fast break results in a shot or defensive stop.

5 Yard Scoop

Teach the fundamentals of ground ball pickups through repetitive scoops. Players line up on the end line, each with a ball. First whistle: roll the ball 5 yards out. Second whistle: sprint to the ball and get into scoop position over it — freeze. Third whistle: scoop through and sprint to the next line. Repeat down the field or back and forth between cones. Variation: After freezing over the ball, kick it out or pull it back with the foot to practice creativity under pressure. Work along the sideline to practice scooping with your back to pressure.

Ground Balls

Perimeter Sprints

Set a team conditioning standard and challenge players to beat it. All players start at one corner of the field. On the whistle, run the full perimeter at a comfortable pace. Record the time. Short break, then challenge the team to beat it. Repeat as conditioning time allows. Variation: Have players cradle balls or run through obstacles around the field.

Conditioning

Funnel

Practice defensive positioning and holds when playing a ball carrier from up top, directing them down the alley. Defensive middies and dummy offensive middies line up outside the restraining line. On the whistle, the ball carrier drives toward the goal. The defender turns his hips, points feet to the sideline, and takes away the middle. Establish contact with a top-hand hold — top hand on the ball carrier's lead shoulder, bottom hand on lead hip, gloves only (no stick contact). If the dodger rolls back, maintain contact and stay topside, driving them down the alley into the slide.

Defense (Individual)

Beat Drill

Start 4v4 in the attack zone. Player 1 dodges from the top corner vs. Player 4 (defender trailing, already beat). Player 5 slides automatically to cover the throwback, while Player 6 (backside helper) supports as a second defender. After the first pass, on-ball defender recovers to the crease; dodger hits throwback, then passes to backside. Backside defender (Player 6) steps out for a quick 1v1. Add Player 7 at X and Player 8 on backside to progress.
