Change of Direction

Develop dodging, footwork, and transitional movement into a shot. Focus on creating time and space. Set up 4 cones in sequence. At each cone, players perform a dodge, switch, or change of direction, then finish with a shot on goal. Emphasize powering off each move and finishing with a shot on the run. Variation: Move cone locations. Add a defender at the last cone. Put targets on the goal or add a goalie.

Zig Zag Dodge Drill

Set up two cones: one downhill, one near goal line extended. Players perform a split dodge at the first cone, then a zigzag dodge at the second, simulating live game action. After the second dodge, make a pass to the backside and cut for a shot. Focus on footwork, timing, and maintaining game-like intensity. Reps should emphasize smooth transitions, realistic angles, and quick decision-making under pressure.

Scoring from X

Set up a goal with a high-crease goalie. Players practice a sequence of 3–4 dodges—split, co-dodge, hesitation—then turn the corner toward the goal. Focus on precise footwork, stick positioning, and quick execution on each move. Incorporate a short final shot under simulated goalie pressure. Emphasize game-like speed and technique over repetition, ensuring each dodge and shot is clean, controlled, and consistent before moving to the next rep.

Roast the Approach

Set two lines of offensive players: righties on one side, lefties on the other. First player starts with the ball on the inside facing an approaching defender. Pass out, read the defender’s angle, then attack down the alley or toward the middle for a quick, controlled shot. Next player rotates to become the defender. Drill flows continuously, emphasizing strong body positioning, stick protection, quick decision-making, and fast shot release under pressure.

Give and Go Drill

- The ball starts at the top near the 15 (higher than the 12m) - Start in your right hand and dodge to your left hand - Once you get to the left elbow, pass down to a coach that in next to the goal - Once you pass, cut backdoor on your defender

Feed the Crease

Practice defending crease players against picks, cuts, and feeds. 2 offensive players on the crease vs 2 defenders. Perimeter players move the ball around looking to feed the crease. Defenders constantly adjust, staying between their man and the ball to deny feeds. Communication is key to covering picks and rolls. Variation: Have offense work pick/re-pick, high-low cuts, and pick-and-roll on the crease.

Team Defense

Man-Ball

Teach team ground ball fundamentals and man-ball communication. Set up 3 defensive lines and 2 offensive lines on the sideline, all facing midfield. Coach rolls a ball into the midfield area. On the whistle, players sprint to the ball. Within 3 yards, players call "man" (check the opponent away) or "ball" (go for the pickup). After one team gains possession, complete 1 pass before returning the ball to the coach. Variation: Have players start on their stomachs or facing away from the ball to force them to locate it on the turn.

Ground Balls

Umbrella Approaches

5-person drill: 4 offensive players on perimeter (varying distances), 1 off-ball defender in middle. Ball starts with D4, passes randomly to perimeter players. Defender makes approach, opponent executes double move at 75% speed, returns ball to D4. Defender recovers, creates ball-you-man triangle, prepares for next approach. Three different approach angles/distances. Ends with ground ball recovery and clear. Emphasizes off-ball positioning and recovery.

Defense (Individual)

Full Field Clearing Drill

Setup: Have 2 lines of defense on either side of the goalie, 3 middies near the center circle, and 2 lines of attack on the other side of the field near the elbows. - Ball starts with the goalie for a clear to the 2 low defenders. - The defense that doesn't get the ball is is streaking up the field towards the middle to receive it. - Once they receive it, the midfielders are cutting and asking for it - Once the midfielders receive it, the attackers are staying wide and asking for the ball - Can then get into a slow break to finish Focus on inside outside inside transition
